At Lochranza, we believe young learners thrive through exploration and active engagement.

Our Primary School Outdoor Education courses offer a fun and  inspiring introduction to the natural world through hands-on learning and exciting adventure. We combine outdoor learning with a wide range of activities designed to build confidence, teamwork, and basic research skills in an engaging and supportive environment.

Pupils will:

  • Learn basic fieldwork techniques and map-reading skills through fun, interactive activities.
  • Explore marine life and coastal ecosystems on an exciting Seashore Safari.
  • Visit the dramatic King’s Caves to see a giant reptile footprint, study coastal landforms, and hear stories about Robert the Bruce.
  • Develop bushcraft skills by working together to build shelters and light campfires.
  • Enjoy evening activities such as a bonfire, team sports, problem-solving games, and mystery trails.
  • Take part in thrilling outdoor adventures including gorge walking, abseiling, canoeing, archery, and more.

Our friendly tutors guide pupils every step of the way, ensuring a safe, supportive, and enriching experience. For many, this is their first adventure away from home—and we aim to make it truly memorable.

FIELD STUDIES

Field Studies for Secondary Level Students: Real-World Learning

Tailor-Made Courses

Our courses are tailored to suit all key stages, levels, and exam boards. Whether your focus is coursework preparation, skill development, curriculum enrichment or outdoor experiences we’ll work with you to design a programme that meets your school’s goals.

Our curriculum-aligned field studies bring subjects to life—immersing students in Arran’s rich and varied landscapes while developing the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to succeed in exams. Through hands-on research and real-world experiences, learners gain a deeper understanding that goes far beyond the classroom.

We offer half-day sessions, full-day excursions, or multi-day fieldwork projects—flexible to suit your itinerary and learning objectives. All data collected can support students’ assessed coursework or be used for follow-up work back at school.

Teachers Testimonials

” I have been bringing schools to Lochranza Field Study Centre for 25 years now and what a unique experience it is! I think that I can sum it up in one word however, Challenge! intellectually, physically, socially, and emotionally. The experience for young people of being on a beautiful island, relying on their friends, adults and, most importantly, themselves over the length of the visit is fundamental to their development, and as the week pans out, the changes you see in the young people can be dramatic, can be life changing and a window on future life choices. It is so much more than a Field Study Centre! The staff we have had over the years have been engaging, intellectually able to challenge at the right level, caring and nurturing and able to balance the intellectual rigour with playing water games or rounders with the young people. An all-round uplifting visit and I can’t wait to go back for the second time this year” –Tim Stout, Head Teacher at Gosforth East Middle School,2025

“Another fantastic week at the Lochranza centre. Communication prior to the Trip is clear and helpful and any questions clarified promptly. Everything from transport to activities is so well organised. Staff are amazing- their knowledge, skills expertise, good humour and helpfulness is so much appreciated. Everything the centre is and does, provides a safe comfortable and happy environment for children to thrive and make the most of the fabulous working opportunities to be their best, to grow and discover what they can do, and have fun. Thank you to the whole team who have given us a very happy week in Lochranza- memories will be cherished forever.”–Ruthvenfield Primary Teachers, 2025
